Set Up Gmail Account In Outlook For Mac

With much difficulty importing data from Outlook 2011, I finally have Outlook 2016 v. 15.33 (170409) working (albeit slowly) on my Mac (OS Sierra v. I have a gmail web account set up in Outlook. I also have an app on my iPhone for the same gmail account, as well as occasional access via web browser on my computer, when Outlook wasn't up and running properly. However, none of the work I'm doing in Outlook specifically is syncing with my phone/webmail.
That is to say, my gmail account will receive an e-mail. If I delete the e-mail in Outlook, it does not sync the deletion across the different platforms from which I access the account. So I then have to log in to gmail on the web or my phone and delete the same e-mail again. Similarly, an e-mail filed into a folder in Outlook on the computer stays in my inbox if I log in to my webmail or check my phone.
However, if I delete an e-mail from my phone, it also deletes in Outlook. It seems as though anything I do IN Outlook is not syncing.
So, log on Gmail account. Choose setting in the dropdown under settings button at the top right panel. As soon as the action of configuring Gmail account in Outlook 2013 is done, we are ready to check and send a new The first window of Outlook 2013 comes up included with setup Wizard.
Is there a setting I need to adjust, or something I am missing? Thanks in advance, Danielle. Thanks for your reply. I should note, prior to switching to Outlook 2016, from 2011, my iPhone mail app and Outlook on the computer synced the gmail account without issue. I have not changed anything on my iPhone since upgrading to Outlook 2016, therefore I assume the setting/issue is without Outlook. All that said, can you help me with a couple of the steps you suggested?

How can I tell if my set up is IMAP or POP? I assumed IMAP but looking in my settings in my mail app, I can't tell. I followed the steps in the article you linked, and had everything set up in my gmail settings and Outlook properly. The gmail account settings transferred over to 2016 from 2011 when I upgraded and imported my data. It does appear in my Gmail account on the web, IMAP is enabled.
Within the account settings in Outlook, my incoming server is imap.gmail.com and outgoing is smtp.gmail.com. Hopefully I have answered the questions and given you more information to help me figure this out. Thanks, Danielle.
With Google moving away from Basic Authentication and recommending to, I want to enable 2-Step Verification for my Google account to increase security. How do I best approach this and what changes do I need to make in Outlook to keep receiving my emails?
Currently, Outlook doesn’t offer native support for OAuth and 2-Step Verification yet.
