Retrive Data From Wd My Passport For Mac

I have had a 500G WD My Passport Essential for a couple of years. I never had any problem before but out of the blue, it fails to appear in 'My Computer' and in Disk Management. For a minute or two, the LED light stays on; then there is a faint click and the light starts flashing.

I have read that I need to use an universal drive adapter but apparently the SATA connection on this drive is unorthodox and cannot connect to the adapter.
