Retrive Data From Wd My Passport For Mac

I have had a 500G WD My Passport Essential for a couple of years. I never had any problem before but out of the blue, it fails to appear in 'My Computer' and in Disk Management. For a minute or two, the LED light stays on; then there is a faint click and the light starts flashing.

It has done this in two different computers. I have many important files in it and wish to retrieve them. I have searched the web up and down and cannot find clear answers to my specific problem. I have read that using a y cable may work because the drive is not getting enough current through the USB cable. I have read that I need to use an universal drive adapter but apparently the SATA connection on this drive is unorthodox and cannot connect to the adapter.

It is also hard to discern the quality of the advise when you're not technically savvy. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
