After following Skype support's solution, the video freezing in Mavericks persisted so I went through the lengthy process of downgrading back to Mountain Lion. The problem there is that I did the update to 10.8.5. The developers for that 'upgrade' does not allow 32 bit 3rd party video applications such as skype to work.

The same camera works on my macbook using Skype in Snow Leopard, so the problem is with the OS, both Mountain Lion and Mavericks. After googling more on the subject, it has been a known issue since at least September 2013 if not earlier.
But APPLE refuses to make a fix for it. So my next step will be to erase everything and install Snow Leopard.
